The African Women’s Health Services Society (AWHSS), also known as Ni Wakati, is a charitable organization dedicated to supporting newly arrived African immigrant and refugee women in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. “Ni Wakati,” meaning “It’s Time” in Swahili, reflects our mission to empower women as they navigate the complexities of healthcare, cultural adaptation, and social integration in Canadian society.
We focus on bridging gaps in access to essential health services, mental wellness support, and social resources. Our platform serves as a compassionate guide, offering culturally sensitive health navigation and peer support. Through personalized guidance, we help women understand and access healthcare systems, manage cultural differences, and address other social determinants of health. By connecting them with empathetic peers and knowledgeable health navigators, we empower African immigrant women and their families to make informed decisions about their well-being, financial stability, and social integration. We believe that every woman deserves equitable access to health and opportunity, and we are committed to fostering resilience, community, and hope for a better future.
